“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech,”
— Proverbs 2:1-12
“So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it,”
— Proverbs 2:20-21
God makes it clear in Proverbs chapter 2 that seeking wisdom and understanding is one of the key principles of living a righteous and fruitful life. He specifically claims that the “Fear of the Lord” is the beginning of all wisdom. That means acknowledging first and foremost who God is - The God of the universe - is the beginning of our understanding about who we are, what we were created for, the way we should live and the things we can do to live a long, fruitful life.
This scripture highlights the benefits of seeking Godly wisdom as a priority. Here are some the benefits highligted below:
- We gain understanding about the world as God has created it to be.
- We are protected by God for being a person of integrity - which comes from obedience to his commands.
- We are guarded and protected by God every in our day to day lives.
- He gives us sound wisdom - meaning the wisdom we recieve from God is unique. It’s different from the wisdom of the world that is unfiltered and compromised. That means in God, we have his secrets to life.
- Through the wisdom given to us by God, we begin to understand what it means to live a righteous life, to please God, to be a people of peace, love and justice (equity).
- When we live by Gods wisdom, we live in a state of Joy - which is also an instruction given to us by God. Our soul is to be joyous (Psalm 86:4).
- God’s wisdom helps us to make important decisions each day. It gives us clarity on what is right or wrong, what/who to trust and what not to trust.
- God’s wisdom delivers us from people who tempt us into ungodly things. Because we know his words and we keep his commandments close to heart, we can’t be persuaded to do things that will lead to our downfall -
That is wisdom.
- Following God’s commandments and living by his wisdom brings us to a place of prosperity both practically and spiritually.
Anyone who is wise to abide by the law guarantees freedom in the land in which he lives. With God, we are guaranteed to not just live in the land he’s sent us to but to never be cut off from the land - That is a promise, and God’s word never comes back void.
