If there are is one discipline I have prioritised in the last 12 months [outside of prayer] it is push ups.
Like many, I used to be obsessed with my physical health. I’ve always been a very sport and athletic person, playing football regularly amongst other sports. However, I’ve had a good long battle with my physical appearance. I fell into the trap of most 20 year olds, wanting to look as big and muscular as I could. I had unrealistic expectations that were met with unrealistic gym schedules. All of this changed when I was diagnosed with a hernia in June 2023. Not only was I forced to stop going to the gym, I had to stop all sporting activities entirely as I made a recovery back to full health. Along that journey, I discovered the power of push ups. I listened to a podcast where a health expert explained the correlation between the amount of push ups you can do and a healthy heart. The more I researched, the more I realised push ups were an easy way to maintain both a healthy heart and a good physique. Furthermore, it’s a great discipline to have because you can physically see the progress you make from your first attempt at 20 push ups to 200.
I’ve now developed the habit of doing push ups whenever I can. I do them at the start of the day, on my break at work, at the end of the day, when I can’t sleep and so forth. The feeling is great, your physique begins to takes new form and your brain will love you for the chemical release as well as the discipline you can apply to other areas in your life.
