The slack hand

“The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This scripture reminds us that God has his eye on the righteous, his children. He looks after them and he will never forsake them.

However, the very next line is a warning that a lazy person may still experience poverty despite this. It highlights two things can exist at once. God, like any good father, will provide for his children and make sure they never go hungry but this doesn’t absolve his children of working hard; because as we know, the result of laziness in every aspect is failure and/or poverty.

I particularly enjoy verse 5 because we’re advises to gather and sow in the summer so that we can reap when it’s time for harvest.

As a teacher, I have knowingly taken this slightly out of context and used it as a tip to prepare myself during the summer for the upcoming academic year.

Of course, for reachers, the summer is a time for relaxafion and rest but I also like to use the time to give myself an advantage ahead of the academic year. Furthermore, with the length of time off we have (5-7 weeks) , it’s a great opportunity to plan, create or start something you wouldn’t be able to do during the academic year.

In conclusion, we are blessed every day by God who provides for us but we are not here to rest on our laurels. Instead, we are called to work and work dilligently that we may see success and live a fruitful life.
